My new favorite time is island time!

Hello everybody!! Today was our second full day in Sweden, and that is absolutely crazy for me to think about, as it already seems like we’ve been here forever! Today was such an amazing day. The weather was really nice all day today and sunny so we decided to take a trip to the islands! After breakfast this morning, we hopped on tram #6 at the local tram station which is about a 1 minute walk from the front door of our hostel. We took this tram to a different stop, then got on tram #11, and then on the express bus. So, after about a 45 minute commute, we made it to the ferry stop to take to our final destination of the island Brännö.

This is a picture of what the trams look like!
This is a picture of Ashley, Sam, and me on the ferry boat!

After arriving at Brännö, I quickly realized that it was completely different from what I had expected. I was expecting a very small island with maybe about 50 houses and some fishing shacks, but was I actually wrong! The island was pretty big and had about 1,000 houses on it. There are no cars allowed on the island, so everybody gets around by either walking, bike, or mopeds. It is very hilly and has a lot of cliffs, and the grass there is greener than it can be! When walking through the streets, I felt like I was in Ireland, and when we got to the shores by the cliffs, I felt like I was in Greece! It was just absolutely stunning and so picturesque, I wish these photos could do it even a little bit of justice! Below are some of my favorite pictures that I took today!

My favorite house that I saw on the island

Since the cove was so stunningly beautiful, we decided to have our picnic lunch there. We had sandwiches that we had made at our hostel earlier, along with chips, fruit, cookies, and soda. Here are some interesting Swedish brands below:

A popular soda in Sweden – tastes like fizzy orange juice/a lighter version of Fanta

After lunch, my friends and I decided to hang around the cliff and get some really cute photos! The background is so pretty that you could believe it was fake and we were photoshopped in, but I promise you that it’s real!

After a long photoshoot, we walked further around the island and found a couple different coves, and then found some giant green fields used for herding sheep, as there were many sheep farms on the island!

In the next picture, you can really see how cars are not the mode of transportation on this island!

After about 3-4 hours on the island, we decided that it was time to head back to the mainland to change and get some dinner! Right before and during the ferry boat ride, the sun started to set and we got some beautiful pictures and views like the one below!

For dinner, we went to a popular pub right down the street from our hostel called Karlson’s Garage. Since we didn’t spend money on lunch, we were allowed to order whatever we wanted, but we were highly encouraged to try the Swedish meatballs! I decided to try them out, and they were so good! Completely different than what I expected yet again, but even better than what I thought!

The Swedish meatballs!! They came with mashed potatoes, lingonberries, and pickled cucumbers! (no, not just pickles, actual pickled cukes!)

After dinner, we returned to the hostel and worked on our blogs and went to bed. What a fun and adventurous day today was!

Things I learned today:

  • It’s fun to try new and authentic, local things like the food
  • Alcohol is super expensive here (the average drink costs around 113 SEK, or about $10)
  • Living in the moment can be very fun, especially when surrounded by beautiful nature
  • Sleep? While traveling in Europe? Never heard of it!
  • Meeting people from other countries is so interesting and they are so incredibly kind! Today, we met people from Australia, South Africa, and other parts of Sweden.

Well, that is all for now! Thank you for reading and check back in around this time tomorrow to see my next post! Goodnight from Göteborg!
